Didn't get job - gutted!

I just had the second interview for a job which would have taken my career up a level - after putting my career on hold for a few years and doing a job that I've outgrown, I was really excited about being given the chance to progress.

After doing first interview which went really well, and then passing some tests and scoring highly I think I'd half convinced myself it was mine even though I knew that it could go either way. It's hard not to start thinking of what could happen if you get it - but then SO disapppointing when you don't.

To make it worse the interviewer said he'd phone by 5 with his decision, he then phoned at 3 so I thought for a moment I'd got it... until he said 'unfortunately you haven't been successful'.

I got down to the final 2, he said I was a strong candidate but someone else was a slightly better fit. So probably not an awful lot I could have done about it.

How to deal with the rejection and disappointment?? There are not many jobs about in my field, and lots of candidates, so its tough out there.

Awh sounds like you were annoyingly close it is a horrible feeling - allow yourself a little wallow - then hit the job sites etc in a couple of days.

I'd rather come 2nd than 10th - I think there were about 10 candidates to start from, although only 3 went through to final stage. I think I'm going to wallow tonight with a chinese takeaway, and stay off the job boards until next week when I've got over it a bit. I know something will come along in time, but patience isn't a strong point for me and this is definitely an exercise in patience!

Bad luck - and well done for being so philosophical about it. Best of luck next time round - the right job will come along in time.

Sorry you didn't get the job. Have you thought of getting some interview feedback from them? As you were very close to being offered, maybe they'd be prepared to give you suggestions on anything to focus on next time.

You never know, they may even consider you for a future vacancy. Also, not meaning to get your hopes up, but if the other offer fell through, you may be still in with a shout. Hope you get back on the job search trail soon, these things have a way of working out well despite the disappointment.
