I just enquired about the salary for a job and got the following reply:-

We don’t give out salary details but when you apply if you indicate what your current salary is and what your expected salary is we can gauge if it’s something that will match what we offer.

Why not just tell me what you offer so that I can avoid wasting my time and yours?

I hate companies like this. But it seems to be quite common. I think it's a combination of not wanting existing staff to find out that they may be underpaid compared to new recruits plus wanting to get new recruits in as cheaply as possible.

Completely agree. This is very annoying. Surely they at least have a minimum they're offering that they can give as guidance!

That is code for "we will pay as little as we can get away with"
