Pitman secretarial training

Has anyone done any of their secretarial courses? Did it help you get a job afterwards?

I'm desperate to change careers and have been considering becoming a medical secretary. I've applied for admin assistant type roles in the past but never even got an interview. I don't have any admin experience as such, although I do work in an office-based professional job so am good with computers, reasonable typing speed etc. and I volunteered for about 6 months as receptionist at Citizens Advice.

I have not had experience of Pitman but I did the AMSPAR medical secretary diploma through my local college a few years ago. It was a 2 year full time course and yes, I got a job straight afterwards at the local hospital as a support medical sec. If I remember correctly, the course involved qualifications in typewriting, word processing, medical word processing, audio-typing, medical audio-typing, shorthand and medical shorthand, text processing, medical terminology and NHS office practices. It was a very intense course with a lot of work, but I really enjoyed it. It was something that I had always wanted to do.

Sorry, not sure if very helpful!

Thanks for your reply, that's very helpful actually! Smile I think the Pitman course is the same (or recognised as the same) as the AMSPAR Level 2, and the course content sounds very similar. Glad to hear you got a job straight after, that's encouraging.
