Manager found out about my new job before I told him, he's not impressed!

I've got a new job, I've known for just over a week.

I was told by my new employer not to resign until I got my contract. It arrived on Saturday, but they emailed my current employers for a reference on Friday when I wasn't in work.

My manager was cool with me this morning and he's usually fine. I was going to speak to him today anyway and when I did, he said he was aware and he really wasn't interested. Now I feel really embarrassed this has happened.

I've apologised, told him I asked them not to contact him until I'd returned the contract, but they ignored this.

It was so awkward 😳 I know he'll still give me a good reference as I'm a valued member of the team.

Does what happened matter? Should I mention it to new employers or let it go as I'm leaving anyway.?

Your manager sounds really unprofessional. Fancy getting the arse over your new job, and being cool. He should have asked what the job was but chose to be a dick.

You had nothing to apologise about, so forget that.

Maybe there was a mix up or lack of communication at the new place. It happens. Is it a large organisation?

I handed my notice in a few weeks ago. My manager hasn't really said anything, and no one from HO has acknowledged it 🖕🏼 Glad I mad that decision now.

Don't worry about it. You're moving jobs, that's life. If your old manager wants to sulk, that's his choice.

You've apologised once, it wasn't actually your fault, and you're allowed to move jobs!

I'd leave it.

Your manager is being unprofessional! Hold your head up high and do not apologise again. You've done nothing wrong. Continue to work hard through your notice period.

On the flip side I've had this happen as a manager to a valued team member and I was really disappointed. The timing is all wrong which isn't your fault but he's not unprofessional , probably miffed you didn't tell him yourself.

He'll get over it.

Just continue to be pleasant and hardworking throughout your notice period.

Unfortunate timing, but not very professional of your new or old employers, but shit happens and sometimes it's hard to time these things perfectly.

By being an arse he's actually making it easier for you nit to feel guilty about leaving so I really wouldn't worry about it

He's being extremely childish. Part of being a manager is realising that sometimes employees move on. Ignore.

the only person who should feel apologetic is him. If he's normally a nice bloke, I imagine he'll go away and then feel really sorry about his behaviour.

I had a job offer on Friday and my boss was emailed the same afternoon requesting a reference! I was called in on the following Monday and it was awkward to say the least. I then had to wait nearly a month for the contract to arrive and finally start the new job in a week - two months of my boss being an arse. Not very professional which is such a shame because I loved my job until he took over and now I will walk out feeling relief that it's over.
