Restructuring and demotion question

My Dh works for a medium sized engineering company. He has recently been promoted to a manager position. Before this he was a team leader. He has been told that a restructure is taking place and he will now be given a different role. The new role is not manager status. Is this legal? He has been working for the company for around 10 years.

How official was his promotion? iow did he get a letter confirming his new position and any changes to his Ts and Cs that signified his promotion was established on his HR record including a new job description.?

It sounds from your description that it all happened so quickly, he was made a manager then suddenly the restructuring happened and the needs of the business changed so he has now ended up back at the same level as before.

Not a good way of establishing good employee relations!

Just to clarify, if it all happened so quickly that none of it was in writing and it was just verbal, ambiguous and not sufficiently formalised for him to do anything about it, other than to express how disappointing and frustrating it has been for him.

Will he have a change in salary, location or working pattern? If roles in his company are graded, is the new role at a lower grade?

Thats a really good point Asmoto. The title and OP is ambiguous as my assumption was that "demotion" referred to the promo to manager and the subsequent demotion down from manager. It could be even worse in that the new role could also be a demotion from the DHs original role.

In that worst case scenario I would say the DH definitely has a reason to lodge a Grievance if no performance process had been executed.
