Freelance Project Management - How did you get into it?

I'm just looking for some advice as to how to get into / experience of project management. I currently work PT as a researcher in a university, but am considering changing roles / looking for something I can do freelance.

Careers advisor didn't recommend PRINCES style training, instead said experience was more important, but then how did you get experience?

Anyone?

What sector are you looking to get into?

Hi! Not sure, software development might be an option as I've some experience, but no idea how the freelance side of it works. Thanks
