Need to make probably £700 a month for a few months

Hi all

Wonder if anyone has any suggestions- might be absolute pie in the sky but someone might have an idea!!

I'm a teacher currently on maternity leave. My ML runs out September 1st. I have a new job to go to from September 1st at a new school that's much closer to home and I'm looking forward to starting.

However we can't really afford to be on £0 for the final three months of my maternity period. As such I need to return to my old job. But I really don't want to. The reasons are several- hate the school tbh, new head of department is an arse, left for maternity under a cloud of ofsted bullshit and the department being in absolute disarray. Hated it. It's also a long way from where I now live so involves a 2.5hr a day round trip. I would do pretty much anything else in order to make a few quid- wouldn't have to be fortunes but just a few quid til my new job starts.

I guess I could tutor but it's quite ad hoc and also June-Sept is totally the wrong time for that kind of work. I'm very good at writing CVs/covering letters/business letters but not sure how I could use that skill to make any money.

Aside from retail/waitressing how could I make some money? Any ideas? Am I being unrealistic?! Almost certainly.

Have you looked at exam marking?? It wouldn't be regular but if you had a couple of contracts it would help

She'd be lucky to get into exam marking at this point - when I was doing it I had to agree before Christmas. However they may have places as people drop out such a lot. It's really horrible marking now that it's all online - the guidance is very poor. Also that would only last for one month.

Thanks- my husband already marks for a humanities subject... I've always resisted because I'm an English teacher and basically the understanding amongst English teachers is that it's not worth it because the pain outweighs the gain. Something to look into though.

Don't fall for MLM or anything like that it your approached (you probably will be), you will lose money.

I think if your near a grammer you would find lots of tutoring, advertise near grammars!

I'm a private tutor. There won't be much tutoring work over the summer. I've never managed more than about £150. Op you might be better off doing tutoring in the run up to the gcse exams instead. Obviously I'm not sure how that would work with your baby.

I was going to say exam marking too. Painful, but sometimes needs must. I think exam boards are still hiring, though not sure which subjects.

Also, could you not return from mat leave for the very last week of term? That way you'd be paid for the summer holidays until you start the new job.

Or advertise somewhere like peopleperhour to see if anyone needs your business letter/ CV writing skills?

I would say Summer Nanny - many people need help.over the school holiday period - I usually hire someone because of our family situation. Sign up with a few agencies.

The international baccalaureate pay much better than most exam boards. I do English exams. It's always hard but they're the only ones that I don't question because it's well paid.

. In my experience, exam boards are always desperate for markers. They are always sending me refer a friend enticements. Worth a try.

I think nannying will be the way to go.
