Jury Service - can one (out of two) employers make me defer it?

I have two part time jobs and have been summoned to do jury service.

The dates would be convenient for me personally as I can arrange childcare and as I could reclaim most of my lost income and the additional childcare costs - if I deferred it and was called in a few months' time, circumstances might be different but I would have to find a way to attend as I wouldn't be able to defer again.

I'm concerned that one employer (job A) will ask me to defer as it is at a busy time for the business (although no time would really be suitable for them as it's a small company). I have to be available for my other job (job B) at certain times each month and the period I've been called for avoids this time but I can't guarantee this would be the case if I deferred it.
I have been in job B much longer but I work more hours for job A, if that is relevant.
Not sure what to do now - any advice appreciated.

Tell yr employer you asked for it to be deferred and they said no

If you are going to do as trump suggests make sure you tell them you have already deferred once so wont be able to defer again

Tell them you deferred a few years ago so have to go. They'll cope. They would have to if you got hit by a bus.

Personally, I would just get it out of the way if it's convenient for you.

Thanks for the responses. I would definitely rather get it out of the way. Been discussing it in the office (boss not in yet) so don't think I can now claim to have deferred it previously, which was good advice. Will see what he says.

They can ask you to try and defer, but can't make you do so.

Without a good excuse you won't be allowed to defer and my boss doesn't like the idea doesn't cut the mustard. Your boss would have to produce specific reasons why this would be a bad time and, as you've said, it's no worse a time than any.

Thanks for the advice. It seems all is ok, so I will respond to the summons before anyone changes their mind!
