New Job Offer

I'm relatively new here,so please bear with me.

I've recently had several job interviews for F/T work as currently work P/T and have a super boss I may add,sadly though as a family we need to increase our income,however as of this week I was offered a F/T job - Fantastic! however as the week went by I have found out that no leave is authorised throughout the summer months, so as we have a daughter who will be still in school holiday time, I feel I am going to have to turn the job down, I had told my boss about the job offer, and updated her on the holiday issue and said I will let them know on Monday, my gut instinct is to turn it down as there are a few things I havent been happy about with the recruiiting process, though it makes me so sad, though on the positive side being wrong side of 50 I can still get a job and obviously have the skills required to get one.. Comments and advice would be great. Thank you so much for reading.

no leave is authorised throughout the summer months

On principle, I wouldn't want to work for a company that refuses any leave during the nicest time of the year when you can enjoy a proper work-life balance by spending a proper summer holiday with your family.

That would be a showstopper - they don't sound like a reasonable employer.

And, in addition to their draconian holiday "ban", if their recruitment process is suspect, then I wouldn't have confidence in other aspects of employee welfare either.

Wow no holiday at all over the summer period??

What's the industry? Is there a clear reason why not.

I was at the hols, nap. I could understand a "first come, first served" approach as a business needs some assurance of staff coverage and not having the entire workforce off at the same time, but they're taking it to an extreme!

If you already feel uncomfortable about your new employers then I would turn down the job as you can guarantee there will be a few more unpleasant surprises. Don't worry about finding another job. am 52 and have just found a much better job after being made redundant from my last job. People do value maturity. It might take a while but stick with it.

I think you are right to turn it down. Sounds like you already had concerns and the holiday situation is a deal breaker.

Thank you for all replies, and being reasonably new here it makes me feel welcome!. Yes I was surprised about the holiday thing, yes it is in education, but hey there must be loads of staff with kids who need holiday, one comment I got was Oh we did let someone have last week in July but it stretched the other staff. Yep with a heavy heart I'll have to turn job down, and Muskey thank you gives me a bit more confidence, also when I told my boss about looking for new F/T job she is keeping her eye out for any possible additional hours, also I as so surprised with what she said, about how capable I am of doing so much more! having a little self belief in myself is in order I think. However over the last 8months I have had two job offers this one and one other(which I had to turn down for other reasons) and perhaps it is third time lucky! It is lovely to have such nice comments and suggestions, it really does give encouragement. Thank you so much Mxx

Good morning all
Well have had a long weekend thinking hard and long about job offer, money would be great, though I don't think even in education environment, they should but a blanket stop on holiday in summer months? surely they can schedule holidays etc, however I am going to ring the HR and discuss this with them and also if they can't change or offer holiday in summer holidays! I shall be turning the job down because of family commitments, yes our DD is 16,though we do like to have the occasional time together as a family in the school holidays, and she is due to go to 6th form college which again has the same holidays and schools. Oh to say I'm so disappointed is an understatement, but perhaps it wasn't meant to be. Thank you so much for replies, much appreciated. Regards Mx

One of my clients is a school uniform manufacturer. There is absolutely no way they can allow people time off between June and
August. (Orders come in June, dispatched August)

They are an excellent employer winning many awards. But if that kind of requirement doesn't suit you then it doesn't. Trying to make a special case is unlikely to make you popular with colleagues.
