Childminder 10 hours a day - is that too much?

Hi,

Does anyone send their children to childcare 10 hours a day? Is it quite common? Does your little one cope well?

Many thanks in advance.

Perfectly usual and normal. Most adults work 9-10 hrs days and need commuting time either way covered

We do 8:30-5:30, so that's nine hours a day. My 1 yr old and 2 year old cope fine but are both a bit tired the next day as they don't nap as well there as at home. My childminder is wonderful, and if they are tired etc they do quiet activities at home for a bit instead.

I work in a nursery. We have several children who do 9-10 hours, but generally 3 or 4 days a week. Only a handful are all day every day.

Everybody's different and I am not here to judge but personally I think it is too much and couldn't do it. I feel sorry for those kiddies who are in 10 hours a day sorry.

Perfectly normal. I'm a childminder and I have some children 11-12 hours a day and overnight. They're often on a shortened week so parents can take time off. Overnight isn't so usual, but I think it will become more usual in the future.

My lo is contracted from half 8 until half 5 Tuesday's, and from half 8 until 5 Wednesday to Friday. However he usually gets there about 9am. So he's there 8 hours Wednesday to Friday and 8.5 hours on a Tuesday.
I think ultimately you have to do what is best for you.

Our 17 month old does two days a week, 0800 to 1800 (OK, usually more like 1745). Most of the other preschoolers who go to this childminder seem to arrive and leave at the same time as us. They have all their meals there, which really helps!

He seems fine, but is sometimes a bit crabby as he doesn't nap for as long as at home and there's lots going on. We usually wait until he's in bed to sort out our dinner, etc, and focus on him once we're home.

Our nanny works 10 hrs per day Monday to Friday. We've had this arrangement since our daughter was 8 months. I think it has been harder for us than her tbh.

My 2 dc (3 and 10 months) do 11 hours one day a week and 9 hours the other day (they're only in nursery 2 days a week). The 3 year old copes fine but the 10 month old does struggle with the very long day. It's not ideal but we just have to make it work. I do feel guilty about it though. DD used to do 10 hours a day, 3 days a week in nursery when she was younger and coped fine though so I think it depends on the child.
