Any non-execs around?

I'd like to broaden my career with a view to (eventually) being able to work relatively part time with a portfolio of non-exec roles. I currently work at mid-senior level.

Any insight as to how it works with your current employer? Many of the NEDs I've encountered work elsewhere. Obviously id have to be cautious of conflict but there's a NED role in a much smaller organisation (it is paid tho) which is totally unconnected to my industry. Do I just apply and if succesful then use my annual leave from current job to do it? I understand I'd have to get my current employer's buy-in but think I'd be able to get this if it's a normal thing to do.

This feels like a totally naive question to ask...

My husband negotiated time for an international NED role in lieu of part of his pay increase. He gets 20 days.

I would need to get permission from my current employer but I don't think they would refuse without a reason. I suggest you ask them - what harm can it do.

Most of the NEDs I've worked with have been at executive level.

What sort of orgs do you want to be a NED for and what would you bring?

Sorry, to clarify, have had careers at executive level. Obviously non exec now.

Most non execs I come across are working in other companies these days. I think the appetite for having the 'retired grey man' is waning as boards seek out more diversity.

I have four NED positions and recommend candidates for consideration as NEDs for other companies. Most companies see it as CPD for their execs and just allow time off. A few (mainly larger corporates) will have an elaborate cross charging process. I have my own business so no issue for me.

I haven't met- -and wouldn't recommend- any non execs who did not already have main board experience.

Thanks for the messages - I really appreciate everyone's experience/perspective.
