I have been on mat leave for 6 months and have now asked to returned but told no jobs - they fill your job when you leave and they will look for a job for me for when I want to return (beginning of may) if there isnt one my boss says he will check what the situation with HR is but thinks he will have to take me back into his team - Does anyone know the rules on this? Its one of the big banks but I'm only at a low level I dont think they can afford to mess up!!!!

I thought they had to keep your job open for you!

Iirc if you only take the first 6 months of ordinary maternity leave you have the right to return to your old job.

If you take the addtional leave you have the right to return to a simialr job with teh same terms & conditions. I think.

I believe as long as they give you the same sort of job in the same location they can get away with it but not 100% I also want to cut down from 4 days to 3 so dont know if this affects it???

Hiya

I work for one of the big banks too and the policy that they have is that if you return to work after 6months, you have the right to return to your old role. If you return after the 6month period, you have a right to return to a job at the same level that you left, but not necessarily the same role or department. Given that you have gone back within the 6month period, I can't see why you can't go back to old role! Do you belong to a union, if so can you check that with them?

Is it just me or do us mums really get a tough deal with all this leaving work/going back to work stuff???!! I got soooooo much cr*p when I was pregs and now management being very tight lipped about what I can expect to go back to (I've stayed at home past the 6mth period) unless I tell them what hours I want to work and there have been loads of changes I haven't even been informed of!! rant rant!!

I said I wanted to take a year off at the beginning it has been 6 months now and I dont want to return til may so will be 8 months as 1 month will be holiday I am still owed!! so I guess they are correct in what they are telling me!!
yes we do get a tough deal and earn very little out of working anyway as most of it goes on the childcare costs!!

I'm due to go back in May as well but haven't said for sure what I'm doing yet.....am thinking it will be good to get out of house and have a little bit of me time but at same time, dreading it - apparently its all got totally serious, target monitored etc and one colleague even got bollocked for going to the toilet too much.....!!!!

Also, am thinking what is point of going back to work when all wages will go on childcare???!!!

I was going to take the year but feel I need to break up my week have 2 boys 2 years apart 2 and 5 months very busy days!! from my point of view although I wont earn much each month I will get share saves, bonus and pension paid which all helps long term!! also my empolyer has a scheme called care_4 where you pay less NI and get some help with childcare only £60 a month if lower rate tax payer but all helps!
