Removal of sick pay

I work for a charity that currently imposes a maximum of two weeks sick pay after which it's SSP. They have now decided to change our contracts to no sick pay whatsoever, just SSP. The problem is, my staff and I work very closely with immuno-suppressed patients so I have a policy of no staff in clinical roles being allowed to come in to work with overt infection and having to be 48 hours symptom free before returning. My staff are very dedicated and conscientious. None of them 'pull sickies' and I feel they are being unfairly disadvantaged in this situation. Can anyone give me some advice on this please?

They are under no obligation to pay anything except SSP. What sort of advice are you after?

If an employer wishes to change terms and conditions of employment they need to consult with staff or their representatives.

Suggest you raise your concerns as part of the consultation process.

Your employer does not just get to chance the terms of employment contracts unilaterally for permanent employees. It has to be done via negotiation.

Isn't there an issue about unilaterally changing a contract? Don't suppose you all belong to a union? Is it a big charity? What about the trustees - they must have approved this- do they understand the issue about staff not being able to come into work because of the safety of patients? Is there anywhere you can put some leverage?

Thanks for all your comments. I made my point to the trustees and they said 'ok then, we won't implement it'. Problem solved.
