Can you apply for a job at an organisation you chair?

I mean, I know you would have to step down as chair but is this possible? Current job suits family life but I need an additional challenge as not massively stimulating. There is a charity nearby I really like and would probably like to work for when kids older. They are looking for a chair. Should I apply or would that preclude working for them in future?

Why don't you ask them?

I don't want to sound stupid and like I don't know about governance!

What's difficult is once you've been chair it's hard then to step back to being a staff member as you know too much of the behind the scenes stuff. I'm thinking specifically of a preschool.

Good point. My aim in my day jobs is no higher than middle management really so they might not want someone with the sort of knowledge you gain chairing to step back to such a role. Difficult. I'm locked into my job for years as its so flexible and our local school has no after school club. Really don't want to stagnate though. I'm lower management and no scope for promotion here. Will have a think but good point Kerberos
