Is this normal or unfair?

So I was supposed to have this afternoon off as part of my normal days off, except I get work put on me last night with no courtesy call or asking if I can do it for my time off. Now I know its the summer holidays and extra working is to be expected ( and frankly the extra money is appreciated) but is it normal for bosses to do that or just plain unfair? If I hadn't checked my schedule I'd have been nonthewiser till the last minute. Should I be peeved about this or not?

Is there an agreement about yiu checking your schedule? What would have happened if you just hadn't? Surely they would have let you know

There isn't an agreement about it, they just assume we'll check it once a day bare minimum. If I hadn't checked they would have only called me when they started getting complaints that I hadn't turned up to the calls

And they wouldn't have so mush as asked me to cover them as told me to go to them and that I wasn't doing my job

Do your days off vary week to week or are they always the same? Will you get the time off on another day?

They are always the same every week. I have no idea if I'll get it off on another day. They haven't said and trying to find someone who knows is like trying to get blood from a stone with our place

Is this a zero hours contract?

What if you just said no, you're not available? None of their business what you are doing.... If it's your day off they cannot just book you in without your consent surely?

Its not a zero hour contract, I'm contracted to do 30 hours a week. If I'd have said no they would have told me that they're vulnerable adults that we look after and can't be let down just like that

If you've been doing the same shift pattern with the same days off for a while, then asking you to work on a normal day off would count as overtime I think; do you have any enhanced rates for overtime, or do you get time off in lieu of payment? Also, does it say anything in your contract about overtime being optional or obligatory?
