Night shifts and holidays

Hi all need advice for a friend

She works shifts as a carer and has a week booked off Monday-Friday, she has been scheduled to work a night shift the Sunday before her holiday, so 7pm Sunday to 7Am Monday. Should she have to do this shift as its cutting into her holiday time?

No. It's up to management to sort it out. You can't put people down to work shifts if they are booked to be on annual leave (unless, she has booked it recently). You friend shouldn't be told to swap it either.
If she is in a union she may need to contact them.

When I worked nights if I booked Monday to Friday off it would mean the shifts starting on those days not ending.

Agree with Dailymail. It's the shifts starting on those days she's booked off. So yes, she needs to work the Sunday shift.

I disagree with everyone else. If she worked for me she would have booked the Sun/Mon shift off, but I would expect her in on the Fri/Sat shift at the end of the week.

We count the night shift as working the day on which you work most hours. So if your shift was 21:00 Sun to 09:00 Mon you would need to book Monday off, if it were 17:00 Sun to 05:00 Mon you would need to book the Sunday off. (We don't have a 18:00 to 06:00 shift, I guess we would decide how that worked).

It will be the same for everyone in the workplace, but not everyone in the world, she needs to check her T&Cs.
