Re-apply after Dismissal

Morning :)

I worked for a large organisation for 3 years and suffered sickness relating to an undiagnosed medical condition. The employer followed their sickness policy, which resulted in my dismissal. Following the dismissal I was diagnosed with a medical condition, received treatment and am pleased to say that the condition no longer exists. This all occurred 7 years ago.

My question:

I wish to return to the employer as the field of work interests me, and I have been working in a similar type role for the past 6 years.

Would/ could the organisation re-employ me?)

Any advice and or opinions welcome :)

No reason why not. Do you know anyone relatively senior who could give you some insight into potential vacancies?

As I'm currently employed by a company that are used by the larger organisation, I have access to all available vacancies.

Your opinion is reassuring, as felt that due to being dismissed I won't have any chance of being successful.

Has anybody here have knowledge of a similar story where there has been a successful re-employment, or any HR members that could give their opinion?

Companies re-employ people all the time. As long as there was no bad feeling, disciplinary issues or performance issues then you are hiring a known quantity.

Some companies will state they have a policy of non re-employment but in my experience that's just a front to make it easier to turn away problems. If you had a good record and the reason for your absence has now been solved then there should not be any issues. (I'm a former HR director)

If I were you (I have re-employed someone in these exact circumstances) I would be upfront about your reason for leaving last time and explain that your medical condition is now under control and detail your sickness record in your current position to back that up.

It's unlikely that there is anyone who remembers the exact reasons for your leaving so save them the trouble of going digging and coming up with half the facts.

Thank you both for your responses. They have certainly given me confidence of putting pen to paper.

Fortunately the medical condition, once medicated, was cured in just under a year.

My sickness record prior to the diagnosis was very high, but since I have had minimal sickness.

I will be completely honest with them, should I apply, and hope that my honesty will speak volumes.

I'm pleased that they shouldn't take 1 look at my name and previous staff number, and refuse me immediately.

Also, just as a thought...remember recruiters can be lazy. I would refer to the details of your past employment with them in the cover letter and then on your CV, kind of assume they've not read it (they quite probably won't have!). I'd put something like:

Sales Manager, Company XYZ. April 2000 - November 2005 (further details within cover letter)
