Question ref contract of employment

Just wanted to check something. Am I right in thinking that an employee is legally entitled to a written contract of employment within 2 months of starting work?

And if it's not been forthcoming and already mentioned, what's the best way to go about getting it without ruffling feathers. Thanks

That's not quite right. A "Written Statement of Employment Particulars" should be provided within two months of starting.

If one has not been provided you should request one from the employer.

A contact is slightly different. A contract doesn't have to be written down, it is the mutual understanding and agreement between two parties. We write them down because it confirms that understanding and agreement (thereby avoiding disputes) and they contain the employment particulars as required by law.

Thanks. I have brought it up with my line manager (politely!) about a month ago. I've been there since Feb. It's just not seemingly urgent. I'm on probation and just want to ensure a smooth transition exiting the probation period in the stated time frame etc

You are entitled to a written statement of particulars with certain basic information about your employment, and 99 times out of 100 this is provided in the form of a contract.
