I'm really fed up at work ... or maybe it's just January blues ... am meeting The Boss tomorrow, What to say?

I had a chat with my line manager last week, and as a result she has told her boss that I'm desperately unhappy and am about to leave, which isn't strictly accurate.

Anyway, he's asked to see me tomorrow, and I'm not sure what I'm going to say. There are loads of things I would like to change, but I'm not sure any of them are very likely.

Should I just choose one issue and push it? And see where I get?

I've not threatened to leave btw, and in any case that's not my style. If I decide to leave, I'll leave; end of story.

But I actually like the hours and the holidays, and that makes up for a LOT. So I'm a lot more likely just to become demotivated, stop doing such a good job as I am doing, and plod along quietly. But I've never done that before in a job, it's not my preferred option, and I'm not sure I've got it in me to do that really.

sorry it's not going too well, roisin.

Could you write down (on here if you like), all the things that really get on your nerves/have a negative impact - then look through them and decide which ones are the most important? Then decide which of those are things that could be changed. Then when you see the boss tomorrow you can say "I am not happy about x, but if we do y instead then things will improve" - that way you can be constructive about things.

And with regard to what your line manager said, I would be honest with the boss and say she overstated your case slightly.

Thanks Miaou. I think I'll have some wine and try and forget about it all for this evening, and see what tomorrow brings.

Cheers,
R

How did it go roisin?

roisin · 20/01/2007 13:00

Thanks for asking Miaou - it went well. I guess I just needed to hear the "you really are doing a fantastic job, and everyone is delighted. You are really making a difference to the kids and the workload of staff in your depts" talk. Plus I also got a crucial "yes" from him on a couple of issues, which have been dodged in the past, so I'm going to follow these through.

I think he also has a better idea now as to where I am coming from, and the commitment I do have to the school.

Oh fab, glad it was so positive and constructive! I think some managers forget how important it is to give positive feedback to staff. I used to be a manager in a retail department and made a point of complimenting staff on something they did well on a regular basis. Other managers thought I was weird (it was a bit of a "dog eat dog" environment ) but I was the one who got the most support/loyalty from people so I guess it worked!

Really pleased to hear about the changes you wanted too - hope you are now able to more actively enjoy what you are doing

I NEED ADVICE ON HOW I CAN MAYBE GO ABOUT MY RECENT EMPLOYMENT AND ONE A FEW YEARS AGO. MY FIST ONE I WORKED INA NURSERY AFTER A YEAR THE MANAGER DECIDED SHE WAS GOING TO PICK ON STAFF MEMEBERS, I WAS ONE OF THEM, SHE WOULD NEVER GREET ME IN THE MORNINGS, TALK ABOUT MY ROOM, WITH MY TEAM MEMEBRS AND ACTED IF I DIDN'T EXIST,HAD FAVOURITES WITH OTHER STAFF MEMEBERS, PICKED ON EVERYTHING I DID, SAYING I WAS CALLING THE CHILDREN THIS N THAT, WHICH WAS UNTRUE. I WENT TO THE AREA MANAGER, AND SHE WAS JUST USELESS AND DIDN'T HELP ATALL. I HAVE ALSO JUST WORKED ATA NURSERY WHERE I FELT AS IF I WAS TREATED UBFAIRLY, AS I WAS PULLED IN THE OFFICE NUMEROUS TIMES, TO BE TOLD SILLY THINGS. WHERE AS IF ANYONE ELSE HAD DONE ANYTHING WRONG, IT WAS SHRUGGED OFF.WHERE DO I GO JUST TO GET ADVICE,NOT BOTHERED ABOUT SUING OR ANYTHING ETC,SEE IF I CAN GET ANYWHERE, OR SOMETHING, OR ANYTHING TO HELP ME. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE LEFT BOTH NURSERIES, BIT I FELT I WAS PUSHED OUT
