Thinking of a job in Marketing

Hi,

I am looking for some advice. I have several years' experience working in Mystery Shopping/Market Research on a freelance basis and I am trying to plan long term. I would like to move into a proper career in marketing somehow (have about 5 or 6 years until I am in a position to work full time) and I am looking for information regarding courses, career paths. If anyone knows of any market research agencies in London or has any advice, it would be much appreciated.

I'm a marketing director - best courses to do are with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing). Many brands require a formal qualification such as a CIM certificate or diploma. There are many entry level marketing roles advertised and with the courses you can climb the ladder fairly quickly in the profession.

Any job that sounds too good to be true (pick the hours you want, wfh etc) usually is. And it certainly won't help much with climbing any career ladder either. And actually, perma-WFH is pretty crap. You end up climbing the walls if it is “enforced” and you don't have the choice of an office to go to.

OP sounds more like she will be heading into the analytical/campaign based type roles with her market research background – that is quite a structured position so you need to like routines and be quite co-ordinated and regimented to ensure everything is going out as it should, when it should analysing the results, A/B testing etc.

I specialise in the creative side, commissioning design and print and working on how campaigns look (before handing off to my campaign colleagues who then send it all out). My role is much “fluffier” than a campaign one and you need to be good at juggling a lot of variable balls a lot of the time, as well as having a good eye for design interpretation of your brand etc. I’m also in charge of all our marketing literature so I have to write and proof that before it gets designed up – although high standards of literacy are vital in marketing IMO. If you struggle with they’re/there/their or see nothing wrong with “could of” you need to learn, fast.

Alternatives (well, an introduction to the specialism really) would be general marketing assistant where you get exposed to a wider range of roles and tasks across a marketing department.

hduggal I have a strong suspicion what your friends are referring to is something call ed multi-level marketing. AKA Pyramid selling - younique and juice+ and the like. That's bargepole territory.
