Redundancy and long-term sickness

My husband has a congenital heart condition and two weeks after he told his manager about it and the fact that at some point he may need some time off he was informed that he is being made redundant (after just over 6 years). He isn't being singled out as such as other redundancies are happening but it does seem interesting/suspicious that they initially identified another internal role for him which ultimately didn't materialise as they 'didn't have the budget for it'. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources about the redundancy process? And if anyone has any advice about the rules around who is selected for redundancy particularly in relation to illness I would be so grateful.
