How to get past I'm 48, my business went bust & my daughter left home when looking/applying for a job

Well I'm not 48 until Thursday next week & I actually consider the loss of my business to be constructive dismissal by the government and DD left home 18 m ago

But where on earth do I start?

That sounds hard about losing your business - do you want to say more about what happened?
As for the rest 48 - not in itself a problem, daughter leaving home depends on why / how she is / how you feel about it....
I'm older than you, retraining for a new career and ds1 left home 6 months ago for University. But I feel optimistic about life (most days).

Oh gosh I am optimistic - but I'm applying for a paid internship so a bit wobbly

I have a job 92 short days) this would be an extra 2 days doing something I've never done before

But intern does not equal grey!

I ran a nursery, changes in Early Years funding, Minimum wage, pensions and tax credits made it impossible to break even never mind make enough to live on so I got out early before everyone else realises it

2 months after I told them the council sent an email to local providers telling them what I had worked out!!

Your dd is where she should be and I know that you know that too.
You should be so proud of her, I know that won't help because I know how much we miss them and worry for them.

You have lots of skills and recent work experience this may be the change that takes you forward in your life.

I supposed "Currently I have no caring responsibilities" covers both ends of the spectrum

I stumbled across an internship last night for Alumni from my Uni.
I was a very mature student, it's not in my field unfortunately, but if it was you should be considered the same as others.

"This role is the ideal learning opportunity for a recent arts graduate or an individual at the start of their career in the industry."

Well it would the my start of my career in this industry but after a very successful other career!!

Katymac, you are another returning-to-work lady I would love to help. You sound like you've lost a bit of your confidence and you're not sure what's next for you. But you should be very confident after having set up and run a business which you very cleverly realised wasn't going to work out because of policy changes and you got out before you lost any more money.
You've also raised a child who has been able to go off into the world and do their own thing. So now it's your time!

To be frank I think it takes a hell of a lot of confidence to walk away from a failing business before it goes bankrupt and within a week I had a 'holding' job.
Less than a month later I am applying for 2 different training positions (I've actually got one of the internships); which I think is pretty good for anyonme never mind starting training at 48 is pretty good.

I don't think confidence is my problem; chosing the right words, creating a reasoned argument is sometimes something I need help with
