when on earth are you supposed to submit VAT returns?

DH has received a 10% surcharge as he was late with his VAT repayment for period 1 dec 2015 - 29 Feb.

He signed up for reminders but never gets them. I suggested he put his own reminder in his diary but he does not understand when it should be submitted.

He can never get hold of anyone from hmrc for help.

Any experts out there?

It would say on his VAT certificate what the quarters are and online it will tell him when they are due

To have a 10% penalty he must have been late at least twice before

If his quarter ends are 29/02, 31/05, 31/08 & 30/11

Then the returns and associated payments have to be made by

07/04, 07/07, 07/10 & 07/01

There's lots of info online. Just google. The HMRC website has a wee pop up offering help too. For starters though:

"Check your VAT Return and payment deadlines in your VAT online account.

Your VAT online account tells you:

when your VAT Returns are due
when the payment must clear HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) account
The deadline for submitting the return online and paying HMRC are usually the same - 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of an accounting period. You need to allow time for the payment to reach HMRC’s account."

Ice maiden, that was very kind and helpful of you to reply. DH was very stressed out and now he has put those dates in his diary for next time so he will not be caught out again.
