17 yo nephew in desperate need of guidance - wants to get into computer games design and is applying for a degree in it, not sure that's the right route and really really needs to talk to someone in the field.

Please help!

Ummm, I know a couple of people very vaguely - one did computer sciences - and does the programming side of things. He is into all sorts of very advanced maths now to solve various algorithms....
The other did History - and then and MA, buthas been interested in game design for years. He and a couple of others designed a card game which was published ('Once upon a time'), and wrote for a couple of games magazines. On the back of that got a job (eventually, after lots of trying!) on the games design side. However the games company was perhaps not the most efficient ever and a lot of them ended up redundant.
Not much help really, but no one else seems to have replied

Dh has been a programmer in the computer games industry since '93. Has said you can email him if your nephew wants to know anything specific. You can contact him on [email protected]

Sorry about the delay everyone.

yomellamoHelly - thanks so much - I've just emailed your DH.

And Donk - thank you too. Kind of confirms my impression of the job prospects within this industry, but maybe yomellamoHelly's DH will clarify things further!

Friend of mine has got hubby who does this - but they have had to go to Canada and USA to work after he got made redundant here as there aren't many firms around the UK that have work. He has loads of qualifications that are relevant to programming, but apparently it is very competitive and they expected him to relocate whenever / wherever they said so - they did compensate them. There is plenty of work abroad. Don't know if that's any help!!
