Has anyone returned to work part time in a sales manager role?

I am just about to return to work after taking my AML. I want to request part time working ideally 3 days per week. My role is sales manager, managing a team of 4 FT sales people. Has anyone managed to successfully negotiate a 3 day week in this type of job. Any advice appreciated as a I have a horrible feeling my employer is going to make it very difficult for me to do this!

I was turned down for a 3 day a week management role, not in sales though. I did however get 4 slightly shorter days in the end, so think carefully about your end goal and what you would do if they turn your request down.

I think most employers would be hard pressed to turn down 4 days per week but this will probably mean that you may end up having f/t responsibilities with p/t pay, a compromise that is worth it for me but would it be for you ?

Also hate to say this but your gut feel on these things is usually right therefore I would think very carefully about how you word your request to make sure it is genuinely feasible from your employers point of view.

Is job share an option for your type of job and if so could you think of anyone to share with you? I only say this because it is a lot harder for them to find genuine reasons to turn down a job share.

Hope it goes ok for you, at least being in sales you will be able to present your rationale in a coherent and enthralling way, I'm sure part of the reason I didn't get what I wanted is because negotiation isn't one of my strong points.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

not in sales but I have a 3 day (but usually 9-10hr days) in a management role. It works for me, I have also agreed to work from home and be "on-call" on the two other days. I also have to be a bit flexible with the days off though and attend the odd meeting (once/twice a month at the most)

Thanks for your help so far with this. Have picked up some great tips i.e being "on call" on the other two days + job share suggestions.

Thats what i did to, you need to be able to show that you can change days to suit the needs of you team and that will enable contact on you non contracted days. Good luck and keep us posted!
