Can a company fund raise for itself?

Hello,

A company I know has been arranging social nights/raffles/silent auctions etc for itself to raise money for its own gain.

Its a school for adults and children in their particular chosen hobby (don't want to put myself or them) and they are trying raise find for new equipment/uniform etc.

It feels very much like you would find raise for a charity but they aren't a charity.

Is this actually allowed? I only ask because it doesn't feel right to me, is it a tax dodging ploy?

Any comments or knowledge would be appreciated.

Sorry, also to add they aren't a non profit company. They are very much a profiting company.
