Finding A Suitable Part-Time Job!

I'm looking for a part-time job to fit in with my Son who is 10. I keep getting interviews but when I go along the hours aren't right or they keep changing the goalposts. I been for a few when they say yes its part time but we want someone to go full time in a few months! Alternatively they want someone to work 10-3 with an hour for lunch to keep you there for as long as possible during the day but pay as little as possible. It is the same with the pay I am going for qualified admin/pa roles and getting offered £7.00 an hour for a role that would pay 18-20k full time. I do keep turning jobs down and some employers are getting really angry saying I'm wasting their time. Just feeling guilty should I just accept that if I want to work part-time I have to be flexible on pay/hours?

Could you look at full time also though now your son is 10? Surely he can make his own way home, breakfast club or go to a club after school some days so you aren't so restricted? It would be easily working say 8-6pm 3 days I would think. On those days he can make own way to school now or go into breakfast club, and can be booked into after school clubs 3 days so he leaves at 5pm, makes own way home and is home alone for just 30-60 mins

Do other parents allow their ten year olds to come home alone and stay in the house? My son would never cope with this and unfortuantely we don't have any breakfast after school clubs here. My son is also very small for his age so I would probably get reported for letting him roam the streets alone.

Really I was looking for advice on employers and if it's their attitude to part-time hours or mine that is the problem. I went for a part-time role 4hrs a day thinking 9-1 would work great but then as they said it had to be 10-3 with an hours for lunch (still 4 hrs).

I think most parents do let 10 year olds come home alone. I'm not saying leaving them home all day alone but walking to school alone, or coming home alone for 30 mins is perfectly normal. They start secondary school at 11years when most make own way to school here in London across London on tubes alone and find own way home until parents return at 6-7pm. So at 10 yes I think it's time to gradually start the odd hour here and there

I'm not seeing the problem. 10-3pm would be perfect surely? Your son assuming ku finishes school around 3/3.30pm, so can stay for after school club until gone 4pm, or head home alone and get a snack by the time you have returned

For myself as an employer, part time hours here are generally full days, but less. Ie full time is 9-6pm, mon-fri. Part time is still 9-6pm but say Monday and Wednesday only. I can't be employing one person 9-10am, another 10-2.30pm to suit school hours, another 2.30-6pm.

You could also consider having an au pair so they can be at home when you son returns if you worked longer hours

I don't think there is one attitude to part-time hours for every business it is different. 60% of my work forces are part timers, but for my business it is in either early or late shifts so 8 till 2 or 2 to 8 for 4 or 5 days a week.
I am uncertain why 10 -3 is not acceptable to you, yes they want you to take a lunch break, but you can get other things done in that hour. You could drop your son off at school, he may have to go to after school club for an hour or walk home and be alone for 30 mins, but at 10 this isn't a big deal.
