Can anyone advise me on how I would become VAT registered, is it straightforward and how much does it cost? are there any good websites that will explain all?

it is straightforward, customs and excise do a video explaining how to pay there are different schemes where you pay account quarterly or annually

if you contact them then they will tell you and send you a pack

i don't think it costs anything but if you are not very financially adept then you might benefit from an accountant and or sage

are you registering because you have or expect to reach the vat limit?

It is a fair bit of hassle. Doesn't cost anything, but does mean you have to deal with the VAT man, who from what I know is a lot more serious than the rest of the Revenue.
