Help me to get off on the right foot with new colleagues

I'm starting a new job with a company that I've had dealings with in the past so I know some of my new colleagues. One is a woman who has worked there for years and has made comments before about new people joining and thinking that they know what they're doing when she knows better. She is actually very nice just a bit protective and threatened by new people, she also has a wealth of experience. I. Haven't done this role before so I want to learn as much from her as possible, I've been told that so long as you let her know you think she's marvellous she'll be fine. I'm a bit worried about getting this right. I think if I'm too fawning I could come across as weak and pathetic, but I'd like to get on with her and learn from her. Has anyone any ideas about the best way of approaching things.

I think it is fine to say how pleased you are to be working with her and how much you are looking forward to learning.
Then listen to your conscience. It pricks us when we are saying or doing things that we shouldn't. ie not being true to our inner selves.
Don't talk too much and do a great deal of listening. You don't have to gush and suck up to her. Just try and be yourself.
Try and take things slowly, listen carefully and keep your self to your self ( no sharing confidential information about yourself) until you learn who you can trust.
