Teachers- applying for a new job while on maternity

I started my maternity leave just after the summer half term. I curtailed my maternity leave before the summer holidays so I could do shared parental leave with my husband. Officially I am back at work on full pay during the holidays while my husband is on statutory parental pay and is at home with me. Come September we will swap over, my husband will return to work on full pay and I will be at home with the baby on statutory parental pay. I am entitled to be on shared parental leave until March 2016. I do not wish to return to my school as I have already been told (informally) that a part time position would not be available and the cost of child care would eat up the majority of my wages. I had decided to hand my notice in to finish around Christmas and pick up supply work from January. However a permanent part time job opportunity has come up outside of education that will allow enough flexibility that childcare costs will not be an issue, if I were to go ahead and apply they would want a September start date. Would it be possible to start a new position and end my shared parental leave and contract with my school or would I have to hand my notice in and not be released from the contract until the end of the Autumn term? Shared parental leave legislation is so new (it came into force April 2015) I cannot get any answers on the internet and I cannot see anything that relates to my predicament in my schools shared parental leave or maternity leave policies (these are very similar documents). Any help would be much appreciated.

I handed my notice in whilst on maternity leave.

I finished my maternity leave 6 weeks early so I could start my new job.
In my resignation letter I stated the date I would be finishing (the day before my new job started) and stated this would be my last day I would be claiming maternity pay.

This was summer term 2014

Thank you for replying, so the school didn't insist on the usual notice period of one term? Did you tell them you had a new job in your resignation letter and how much notice did you give them?

No I didn't as I just stated I wouldn't be returning after maternity leave and this is the date u want it to stop.
It's up to you how long you take for maternity.
I would let them know ASAP that you are planning on not returning after your leave and state the date you want it to finish.
