Insurance for freelancer

I left my PAYE job in February. I've since been looking for freelance contracts. My first contract (since May) is in a community development type role and is only 4-5 hrs per week.

Last week was offered freelance contract for a much more substantial role, producing a regular newsletter for a local charity. The brief states that it is freelance role (all fine, am registering as self-employed for tax) and that I must have my own insurance. Does this refer to Public Liability? Don't think Professional Indemnity would apply?

What kind of insurance cover do you have for your freelance work? I asked a friend who is freelance journalist (so vaguely simlar area) and she said she didn't have insurance cover...

Any advice gratefully received Smile

Professional Indemnity may well apply if you are producing a newsletter - what if you (accidently, of course) say something defamatory, especially if there is an online version.

In the past I have managed social network accounts for clients on a freelance basis and that was a nightmare to get insurance for as I had direct access to the accounts and no-one had to approve what I was posting. In the end there was only one company who would insure me - that was Hiscox.

I would definitely get Professional Indemnity insurance.

Also - once you are earning a decent salary - salary protection if you become ill and can't work is worth thinking about.

Good Luck!

Thanks Anna, that does help to clarify things. I will look at prof indemnity.

I am bricking it slightly as I feel like I'm making it up as I go along! I think I'll feel better when I can actually start the work Smile
