If you earn £400 or more a month from home please tell me how?

Sahm I would like to start bringing in a bit of money each month.
I've thought about buying and selling, making and selling cakes- what else might I do?
If anyone does make money from home please tell me how- I feel like I thought about nothing else for a while but not getting anywhere.

What did you do before you became a sahm? I and several acquaintances earn between £20k and £40k working from home but for all but one it's doing consultancy type work in the fields we built up 10-15 years of experience in before babies. The exception is someone who has created a small Internet based business importing in bulk and selling on specialist craft materials that were previously very difficult to get hold of in this country.

There's very little money in making and selling anything, especially cakes.

I'm now a WOHM, but I used to work from home marking assignments for students doing a distance learning course relevant to my previous profession.

I worked in a very specialised random role really for the government I don't feel I can do much with :(
Feel like I need to start something completely new but what is the issue now.

What are your skills? Are you mathematically inclined/logical thinker/problem solver/outgoing and chatty/networker/multitasking juggler/negotiator? Are you introvert or extrovert? Do you know your Belbin or Myers-Briggs personality type?

You could sell Aloe Vera, apparently you will earn a million pounds a year just from watching DVDs in the bath whilst drinking wine and home educating your children! .. On a serious note, I have no idea!!

I'm ESFJ type.
I wasn't suited to my last role in that I could go the while day not speaking to a soul. But whatever I take on now I would be I dealing only doing doing it 3 hours a day do if it was something where I wasn't speaking to others much it wouldn't matter so much as its only for short time per day Iyswim.
I'm quite analytical and can fault find easily. I'm organised and quite logical I would say.

You sure can make money making and selling things BUT the majority don't. I do but that's as a jewellery designer and silversmith, with nice prices ;)

I know some people do well with their own transcription business.

Be wary of direct selling companies, as they don't make much money unless they pester friends or recruit people and 'get promoted' (and think they are business owners LOL).

Also be aware that making things isn't likely to give a good income either, unless you are good, have a market, charge decent prices (priced to suit you not cheaply to undercut or encourage customers) and have a unique selling point, it's also a lot of work to do it properly -most don't do it properly and have 'hobby businesses'.

I'm a digital consultant. I work on PPH and am increasingly getting clients though word of mouth. I've even started taking on other freelancers to help me. It's great.

You won't make a penny making things and selling them online. Not going to happen. You need to offer a service that people need. Find someone's pain! So, being a virtual assistant or book keeper (can you do either of these things) or think bigger - what did you do before you became a SAHM? Whatever it was you did, assuming you were moderately good at it, there should be scope for selling that skill online - take a look on People Per Hour and see what sorts of services people are offering there and where you would fit in, if at all. Then you start pitching for jobs like crazy and you'll be working in no time.

I'm a proofreader; I earn about £15 an hour. Ish. Flat rate per book. I do a book a month at the moment and have less childfree time than you, and that's about £400.

How did you get into proofreading, Rosalies?

I do proofreading and transcription amongst other things and can earn a great deal more than 400 a month, more than that a week tbh, but it is hard work, long hours and I have years of experience plus lots of contacts. I don't think you will make much baking cakes. Think about your hard skills and see if they can be used.

DP and I recently relocated for his amazing work opportunity and, although I am allowed to work here, it isn't that easy & not a lot of jobs that I would be allowed to do.

I've just started freelancing for my old boss (still got a visa & bank account in our previous country, so get paid into that) and get approx. £350-600 a month for mainly data entry and mapping out industry information.

I'm looking to get into a different area of work and I'm studying a Masters towards it, but this money ties me over for the next year or so until we move somewhere where we can both work easily and also means I can fill my CV with something.

An expat friend of mine makes cakes, both occasion and weekly for a local cafe and charges about £30 per cake. She probably makes about £250 in a very good month, but does it more for the love of it than for money.

Would also love to get into proofreading, seems a good match for my skills.

I have just done they myers-briggs and am ENJF... any thoughts on jobs for me?? am determined to leave my job (just returned from Mat leave and HATING it) as I really want to spend more time with my one year-old... Saying that I'd really like to get pregnant again so should maybe ride it out until I've had number two (obv is a matter of time and I might go mad before this happens!!). Am very good at getting things done when there's something in it for me, am very poor at motivating myself when it's for someone else's benefit, so am finding my current job very unfulfilling and am not being very productive (hence being on mumsnet!!)
Am keen and looking into SEO, I don't have an IT background but feel I am a good self-starter and could possibly teach myself....

Grumpy and Roaslie, How and where do you get your proofreading contracts from? I love reading and always seem to be correcting peoples grammar.

If you want to continue to love reading, I'd avoid being a proofreader, unless of course your love extends to checking the order of academic references and the exact spelling of Ghuwayr/ Ghwair /Ghuwyar / Guwayr when it crops up for the twentieth time in the same text.

Lancelottie, that sounds like a heavenly way to spend an evening. And people will pay you for it? Where do I sign up?

shalom1 and StormyBrid - there are a lot of ex in-house editors out there who freelance (I am one of them and have an MPhil in Publishing Studies and worked in-house for 11 years), so sadly loving reading and liking grammar is almost certainly not enough to get you work.

Have a look at the SfEP and the Publishers Training Centre and consider investing in training if you want to go down that route.
