Bank holiday question

Hi i work 22.5 hours over 3 days and I'm told my holiday pay works out like this:-

22 days holiday x 4.5 hours = 99 hours
10 bank holiday x 4.5 hours= 45 hours

Total = 144 hours

For every bank holiday that I have off they deduct 7.5 hours off me as that is what I work on Mondays/Fridays

10 bank holidays x 7.5 hours = 75 hours

This only leave me with 69 hours holiday which is 3 weeks. I have asked if I can work bank holidays as I don't want all my holiday allowance to be used on bank holidays but my manager has said that all staff must do one each.

Now I don't have enough holidays to cover school holidays because I've wasted holidays having bank hold off when my hubby could of looked ayer the kids.

Is this right?

Anyway, you get a pro-rata entitlement for BHs and if you work a Monday you are always going to be worse off.

Those calculations would be correct if you work Monday, Thursday and Friday as this is when the BHs fall this year.

If you work those days then yes, you have to use your annual leave the cover the shortfall in what you are entitled to and what you take.

Still have no idea why you get 10 Bank Holidays, unless they are additional days given by your company?

That is the technically correct way of doing it. It's rubbish though.

Ah right, OK. We run a calendar year so I got confused.

Never ever work Monday if you're part time, you'll usually end up worse off in terms of holidays.

You don't end up 'worse off' if you work Mondays as a part-timer, you get exactly the same leave, but you just have less choice over when you get to take it, that's all.

Could your employer let you swap a work day for some of the bank holidays, so you get to take your day elsewhere? Or build up toil (effectively the same thing) for the school holidays?

Obviously Elly is right but what I meant was you have to top up your bank holidays with your own allowance thereby leaving less holiday to book as you please.

I'm slightly confused with my holiday entitlement and wondered if anyone could help me?

I work 3 days per week, Monday Tuesday and Thursday. Full time staff are entitled to 33 days holiday including bank holidays.

My pro rata holiday is rounded up to 20 days. I have to book off the bank holidays from my holiday entitlement.

My question is, I don't work Good Friday nor will I work Boxing Day this year...does that mean I should be given 2 days off in lieu for these days not worked?

I might be being a bit dumb, hence I don't want to ask HR!

As you say, your pro rata calculation is based on the FT equivalent which includes bank holidays. As Friday and Saturdays are your non working days you would not accrue holiday for them. You don't get days in lieu for days you don't work/aren't contracted to work. You have however been given a pro rata proportion of your entitlement in your yearly holiday allowance. Does that make sense?

So Alice is getting 3/5 of Good Friday and Boxing Day already as part of her pro rata holiday? (Also confused - hope I have this right!)

No. Bank holidays are really a bit of a red herring.

Full time staff get 33 days holiday. There are 8 bank holidays which they have to take off so that leaves them with 25 days to use however they wish.

Alice gets 20 days holiday. She won't work Good Friday or Boxing Day so there will be 6 bank holidays falling on her working days. She has to take those off leaving her with 14 days to use however she wants. If all 8 bank holidays fell on days she would normally work she would only have 12 days to use however she wants. If none of the bank holidays fell on days she would normally work she would have 20 days to use however she wants.

Thank you. I think it is different in my head as as a teacher our leave is a strange sort of thing with bank holidays, holidays and school closure days.
