Notice period for self employed

Hi all! don't like my new job, started mid-October and already not for me, for a variety of reasons - won't bore you with them - am intending on handing in my notice at the end of the month.

I'm working on a self employed basis, part-time. My contract states one months notice - but can they hold me to this? I am after all self employed and not an employee, I get paid by the hour. Bearing in mind there's hardly any work to do at the moment, I appear to have joined at a quiet time, some days there is so little work it's not worth me going in for IYSWIM.

Any advice gratefully received. TIA lmb
