Help to get out of nursing, please!

So fed up of nursing. Have worked as a nurse for 10 years and currently work part time in the community on a Band 6.
Really want to get out but don't where to start?
Any advice, any other nurses who have got out, how is it going?
I look at my hourly rate and can't find anything else that pays the same but I'm miserable.

I'm not a nurse but my auntie is and she left nursing to go into medical device sales. Ideal for people with a nursing background as you have the theatre experience which is welcomed as you can demonstrate the products well. You don't always have to do sales either as you could be a product trainer etc.

Not to hijack or be nosy but could I ask why you want to leave nursing? I'm actually looking to get into nursing and midwifery so I'm just curious.

I too am desperate to get out of Nursing but clueless as to what else to do that would pay enough . I feel very stuck - can't afford to retrain and finding it really hard to know what else to do as Nursing is all I have ever done for nearly 30 years !

I used to be a medical rep and there were a few people doing it with nursing backgrounds, although many companies have cut their sales teams so there aren't as many opportunities.
Word of warning though, some of the x nurses really struggled with the ethics of promoting one product or device over another.

Have you thought about administration or medical secretary work? I would have thought you would be at an advantage in any hospital job with nursing experience

I just feel fed up of the stress of my job and in my role so much is heaped onto you and you just have to take it and manage.
I would love to just go to work, do my job and come home without constantly bringing worries home.
My job pays reasonably well though which means I can work part time, pay the childcare and have a little left over.
I just feel lost as to what else to do. I wish I had the funds to start up my own business.

Babyroobs, 30 years is a long time. Would you be eligible to take your pension and take a part time post doing something different or start up a wee business?

I feel the same. 24 years, can't take pension. Constant stress, worry and more and more work given to us depute already being stretched :(

Can't take a pension as I'm only 48 ! Also have 4 kids to support so really need to do something that pays equally as much as I'm earning now and fits around the kids, youngest is still only 10. There are some positives in Nursing - I can work weekends and nights to fit around my family. I'm just so fed up of the stress and constant worry it brings !

What about teaching? Lots of my university lecturers (I'm student nurse) are ex-nurses, or you could go into research nursing so not actually doing any 'nursing' of patients so to speak?

Thanks Idontknow, I've thought about teaching a few times but think I need to have completed my masters to get a post as a lecturer. This may be something for further down the line.
Do you know anything about research nursing? Sounds good.

I'm a research nurse and the speciality I work in is still very hands on with patients albeit not involved within the care team. My job can be lovely but is very stressful at times (mainly due to management!) so not so different from when I worked clinically.

I think some research can be done in labratories/behind the scenes so to speak. In Cardiff they have a big team of research nurses, and they don't work with patients. Sorry I can't help more but I'm sure you could google

You might also be able to do PGC type thing and teach health and social care/ health sciences at A-Level/college level. I know it's not degree level nursing but it's close :)

I work in the NHS too (top of band 6, different profession) and I am desperate to get out. This is due to being moved to another hospital and increased out of hours (even though I am part time) with lower pay/out of hours payments that are peanuts. Anyone is crazy to train in the NHS these days.
I have a place on a post-16 PGCE and a college has already offered me hours to teach on the A-level Biology/BTEC Applied Science course. It can also be used to move into Higher Ed. It is one day a week over 2 year. My friend was an A&E nurse and moved into this area (now earns more than she ever did nursing).
I also have a place on a school PGCE but I am worried that school teaching is just way too stressful these days.

I also feel the same, been nursing in the nhs for 10 years and had enough of the stress, worry and increasing demands on nurses, I'm on a band 5 which is not great money but all the other jobs I would like to do, teaching assistant, support worker etc are paid much less. I don't know what to suggest to do, I'm not a general nurse, I work in mental health so feel that opportunities are more limited. Nursing is now paperwork, audits and a huge amount of stress.

I've decided I'm going to hand my notice in. I'm fed up but have Been feeling trapped as though I'm somehow tied to the NHS.
I've made up my mind and feel happier already.
I can't wait til I've handed my letter in and worked my four week notice period.
I feel a relieved already.

It's 8 weeks notice for a band 6.
