Contract change

Hello,

I've worked at the same place since January 2007 on a permanent contract. I returned recently in January 2015 after mat leave. Whilst off on leave the programme I worked on (think new deal government) was replaced by another contract that lasts to 2020. Our workplace has always ran these contracts on behalf of gov bodies they always have an end date and we always hop we get the new tender but our work contract always was for permanent. Anyway I was called into a meeting to state my new job title as the role I was doing no longer exists under new tender and also that my term of contract was changing to go along side the length of the new tender 2020. I rather stupidly signed it but on thinking about it I don't think I should have. How will it affect me no longer being permanent? Can I challenge this? I read online that after 4 years in a place your considered permanent anyway. Can anyone advise what I should I do should I say I don't agree with the change.

Don't worry. You are already permanent. Even if you weren't, this wouldn't change anything. All it's saying is your current post is tied to this contract which ends in 2020. That means if you are still there in 2020, that position might be redundant, at which point they'll need to find you something else or pay you redundancy. That would be exactly the same whether it says that in the contract or not.
