'References will be checked prior to interview'

I've seen this on several applications and it worries me a bit!

I do have perfectly good referees, but two of them are my current line manager/operations manager and I worry that they'll lose confidence in me once they find I'm seeking another job.

I actually love my current job but need more money and at risk of sounding like a cliche, I want to find something where I can progress further - and sadly my current place isnt in a position to offer me either at the moment whereas other places do.

Do they actually check them prior to interview? And if so, does anyone know why?

I'm in the same position although I dislike my current job!
If they give you the option I say NO to them asking for a ref prior to interview, I don't see why they need it, I'm obv a nice person if I already have a job! also isn't that what the interview is for? to see what you're like as a person?

Maybe put on your CV where your references are (not prior to interview) ?
