Feeling slightly lost...

I have been in my current job for over six years now, I enjoy it (when I'm actually allowed to get on and do it) and believe I am good at it.

However, I have an outstanding grievance against my Line manager, which is another issue but their micro managing and deluded ideas are making it difficult for me to do my job. The other office based staff are bitchy, pessimistic and two faced.

I have made up my mind that I need to leave this environment and am applying for other jobs, but I just don't know what I want to do!!

I think I would like to get into secondary teaching but I don't have the qualifications to do the subject I would like to teach so would have to completely retrain. This is something I am more than willing to do however we have a young family, mortgage and DH contract finishes next year so there is the financial uncertainty that goes with it..... Plus to do teacher training I would have to be away from home to complete my studies.

I enjoy; marketing, advertising, events management, co-ordinating.
I am very much a people person and enjoy interacting with the general public. I'm quite a creative and proactive person.

I have at least another 30 working years ahead of me so looking for I would enjoy-any suggestions??

I don't like to see posts unanswered, so this is an answer that will bump for you, if not necessarily be the fullest answer to your question.... I thought, when I read this, wedding planner?

I think most companies nowadays have marketing departments.
Have you had a look at ads in that area?
Some require foreign language and others knowledge of certain software packages. However like in my company they travel fair amount for various events.
How about Office Manager job?

Unexpected · 05/05/2015 20:13

What do you actually do at the moment? Do you have any experience in the areas you are interested in moving to? Marketing and advertising are both very competitive areas, very popular with graduates and not easy to get started in. Similarly, every second person who leaves college these days seems to want to do event management or planning so unless you have something different to offer probably not that easy to get into.

Thanks guys, I have a truly unique dual role where I am office manager and do event management. I do enjoy it however my colleagues and line manager are making it unbearable for me.

Wedding planner would be a fab job however that field is very competitive locally! I have applied for a few marketing assistant posts at the weekend and they do seem to be very popular.

I think as I'm feeling very down about my current job and thought perhaps this is an ideal opportunity for career change but financially it isn't an option. Think I will suck it up and continue looking for a new job

There's quite a difference between marketing/advertising and secondary teaching.

I'm always a fan of thinking long-term, looking at where you ultimately want to be and doing whatever you need to do to get there.

Why not post in the Staffroom topic for thoughts from secondary teachers?

maybetomorrow22 · 06/05/2015 19:11

Ah good idea flowery, thanks! I am feeling a bit lost hence the confusing career paths
