Role placed on hold

I applied for a job a few weeks ago and hadn't heard anything so I'd just given up hope.
I had an email today saying that the "role had been put on hold" and should the vacancy be re advertised in the future it would be in the website.
Obviously nothing is happening with the job now but I was just wondering if anyone knew what the term meant? It's not something I've come across before.

It simply means that they have decided not to recruit anyone at the moment. This could be due to a lack of money or it could be for other reasons. The role may be revived at some point in future or it may have disappeared forever.

Thanks for your reply, I thought it may have been a funding issue. Better than being outright rejected I guess!
