Work from home mum?

Hey,
My pfb is 4 months and I'm starting to think of how I can earn money while staying home with him once maternity pay stops.

If you work from home, what do you actually do? I have a first class degree but it is in film which I don't really want to go into.

Have discovered transcriptor positions which sound like they would suit me and my abilities perfectly, but I wanted to know if any of you do this or similar and are you able to actually make a decent wage from it? We need about 500 a month from my wage whatever I end up doing and I want it to be from home.

I run my own Private PA business. I have done so for the last three years.
I'm currently expecting my first child & will continue working for myself after he is born in July.

I have undertaken transcriber work & often get contacted to do this so the work is definately out there. However. I will say you need to have excellent typing skills, a quiet working environment (essential) Some audio typing software & pedal. All of this is easily attainable and not costly.

I have seen people look for transcribers on here & also sites like www.peopleperhour.com (they take a cut of your fee & you are responsible for all your own tax & NI).

I would say - Ensure that you have set working time where you can be child free. This will make the task a lot easier because transcribing accurately in detail isn't as easy as it sounds.

Ensure that you set your fee in a sensible matter. I have a pretty good speed & I work by the rule that 1 hour of audio is 3 hours of work.
You really need to be making upwards of 35 per audio hour to make this worth your while by the time you take any tax & ni off.

Thank you so much for your very helpful messages. Essexmummy I didn't even know that was a job! I would do anything really that would bring in the money that I could do with my son. I have no idea what my options are which is pretty daunting!

Oh and thank you for the websites, I'll definitely have a go at the typing test when I'm on a proper computer not a tablet.

My advice would be to make bets use of the resources available to you. You have your computer, which provides ample opportunity for all sorts of jobs such as a freelance writer, and if you're interested in being an audio typist, you could probably do that with no problem!

With the internet, you could also have an online store if you have a product that you think people would be interested in. eCommerce is a very good way to make money and can be achieved with very little upfront spending.

You say you'll be working at home taking care of your child? You could always turn it into a job? You could look into childcare and use your home space to your advantage! Get yourself some play toys and nursery furniture and you could probably draw in some clients fairly soon. Nursery stuff can be bought very cheaply too, you can also get a discount at Gopak on everything nursery related using the code NUR2015.

If there's a forum to share discount codes and freebies, can someone direct me? If not, there should be ;)

Hi, good luck with whatever you decide, I have worked from home on and off for years but have to point out that I had to work unsociable hours when my daughter was young, evenings, weekends, early mornings and it was exhausting. There is no way on earth you could do transcribing (or many jobs) with your baby around. I had a nice little Ebay business for a while but I believe it is very hard now to make proper money on Ebay. I do specialised admin work now during school hours but charge a pretty high rate. Have a think about what you can do, what hours you have available (realistically) and what equipment you would need to get going, New printer? better phone? any software?

I didn't want to return to work after my recent maternity leave with my 3rd child. I've signed up with a network marketing company (not sure if I can put the name here). I've found the training easy to follow and I've been able to start earning. I'm hoping to replace my teaching wage by Christmas and can see how it's achievable x

Also I forgot to say- not sure if you're still on maternity leave but this is something I've looked into and it doesn't effect your maternity pay x

I ve been reading about the transcribing jobs but at 25 words a minute I m not sure I qualify as a fast typist:) Having a go at the typing races to see if I can get up to 100 words a minute by xmas, then I can have a transcribing job in the new year!
