My dh started a new job just under 6 months ago in a fairly senior role. He has never been given a contract despite asking but assumed it would come eventually! Today was pay day and he's called in a right state as he (and all the other staff) have not been paid as the company is in difficulties. We have no idea when he will be paid. Our mortgage payment also goes out today and this will affect our credit rating. We have other commitments going out this week. We are extremely worried! What on earth should/can we do?? Please help - I can't think straight and am in total panic mode....

First off phone the bank and everyone who has a direct debit/standing order winging it's way to them this week. Can you arrange an emergency overdraft?

What an awful situation to be in.

dh is on the phone to the mortgage people. I am SO angry/upset. This is going to (potentially) affect our ability to get a mortgage in the future and has longer term implications let alone the stress involved. Seething (in between crying!!)....

I don't think it matters that he has no written contract. Can he contact the CEO and find out whether they are still solvent , just late with payroll, or are calling in receivers? Unfortunately any payout may not be high doth 6 months' service but if the business is to trade or may be sold there might be a bonus for staying on. Can he call ACAS for advice!

Apparently the company is awaiting a loan of some sort from the bank which they say will come but is delayed. All sounds very dodgy to me.

It is possible they're waiting on a loan, there may be formalities to complete before the bank can release the money, but they are in dire straights financially if they've cut it this fine to get it all in place.

ATM all you can do is speak to all your DD people and have them delayed and keep your fingers crossed they come good with this month's money. Employees are not in a great position if a company does go bust, unfortunately but there is an Insurance scheme to make sure he gets up to 8 weeks wages owed details here

In your Dh's position, regardless of whether this gets sorted this time, I'd be looking for a way out sharpish.
