Going back after a long break

Been a SAHM/Childminder for a long time - 7 years now and I'm looking to go back out to work when DC3 starts pre school in September. I've started off my CV on the Jobsearch site and signed up for email updates on all the websites I can find but I really have no clue where to start - it feels like a hell of a long time since I was out in the real world!
Will personal references do? My previous employer has retired and we did not part on good terms anyway (not fired, just not a good finish) a former colleague still works there and we are good friends, is asking her to do it ok?
How do I make a 7 year gap raising a family look good on a CV? Will utilising my organisational skills in the home do?
I can sort childcare, the wrap around care is good here and I'm looking at part time anyway. DH works FT and then some so it will be mostly up to me to deal with that purely for practical reasons.
So much to think about... Any help gratefully received Smile
