3 days a week...but which 3 days?

Hello
I am about to go part time - half of me's very excited to be finally able to spend more time with the DCs, the other half is very nervous of how I'll make it work. But my question is, does anyone have any advice as to which 3 days of the week I should work? Mon, Tues, Weds or Tues, Weds, Thurs? Or doesn't it make a difference? Somehow Tues-Thurs feels like there is less of a long gap when I'm not in the office. Any views much appreciated. Thanks.

I've heard people say it's best to avoid working on Mondays, because of the bank holidays, so there are several weeks a year when you'd get a free day off on Mon anyway.

I do tues/wed/fri (not my choice) which works out great. I notice I feel very frazzled by the end of Wednesday but have the next day to recover and do gentle things with the kids. Then ther' s just one day which is easy to get through.

I'd do Tue-Thu in an ideal world. You'll still get the public holidays pro-rata?

Imperial · 21/03/2015 14:44

If you have the choice Tues/Wed/Fri works really well

dicko1 · 22/03/2015 09:45

Im back tomorrow mon, wed, fri not by choice. I personally would have loved mon, tues, wed x

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.
Bank holidays should be pro-rated so you might have to lose a couple of days holiday. I found Monday was often the most productive/busiest day with planning meetings etc.
Then have weds off, things can wait from Tuesday to Thursday, or Thursday to Monday. If you leave the office weds and not back til Monday, or leave on Thursday not back til Tuesday, that is too long for things to wait. All depends on the job though I guess.

I do Wed, Thur, Fri. I love it. Especially my Mondays off, bliss to go to bed on a Sunday without that sinking feeling. I know lots of people like Fri off but I like seeing the week out, work-wise. And I feel like I've earnt my weekend properly!

HungryDam · 22/03/2015 09:51

I would probably prefer Tuesday to Thursday too.

NakedFamilyFightClub · 22/03/2015 09:52

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday works well for me. I get bank holidays added to my holiday pro-rata so although I do have to take them out of annual leave it's not a big deal.

This works with my typical work load though, it might be harder from one job to another.

TeddTess · 22/03/2015 09:58

If you want to make 3 days a week work you need to think about what suits the company/your colleagues best, not just what suits you best (I am sure most people would choose tues-thurs) having a 4 day weekend.

museumum · 22/03/2015 10:05

I did Tuesday to Thursday and found it stressful. If you're out on Friday and miss stuff then most people expect you to be back on it on the Monday.
It depends on your work and if you have an inbox like that but I hated it. I now work mon to Thur but in future might drop a day again and it will be tues or weds so I am covering the week better.

museumum · 22/03/2015 10:06

It also depends in your area. Here schools finish at lunchtime in s Friday so loads of parents have Fridays off so it's almost expected that you may or may not get a response in a Friday.

cheminotte · 22/03/2015 10:08

Tues - Thurs effectively gives you more A/L as you get 3/5 of BHs. But do also consider any fixed meetings, e.g. team meetings on a Monday morning. I felt less of a team member for missing these as missed both official and unofficial (aka gossip) that had been discussed. If any DC are school age, Inset days are often on a Monday or Friday so that's worth considering too.

CheeseGrater · 22/03/2015 19:29

I found tues/weds/thurs annoying. I'd spend most of Thursday rallying people to get stuff done whilst I was out Friday and Monday and then most of Tuesday chasing them up, by which point it felt like almost a whole week had passed.

I'm currently waiting to hear if I can do 3 days. Have said I'm open to suggestions but given a choice I think it'd be mon/tues/thurs or even mon/weds/fri.

EmilyMaud · 22/03/2015 20:17

I do Tuesday, Thursday and Friday's. Bank holidays are pro rata so I always end up having extra lieu leave added to my holiday allowance. People who work Monday's end up losing a lot of lieu and annual leave to cover the bank hols (if they are part time and work Monday's).
I like having Monday's off as the school often has teacher training days on a Monday so I save a day of childcare.
I used to do Tues, Weds and Thurs and, yes. you get an extra long weekend but I quite like having a break in between my days.

lostindubai · 22/03/2015 20:22

Monday Tuesday and Friday here. Works really well. I feel like I get two weekends per week and I never work more than two days in a row. Also working Fridays there is always that feelgood factor in the office and after work drinks

I do mon, wed, fri. I think less people do a Friday but I find this day at work a bit quieter and getting childcare for a Friday was not an issue
