What's the form if I'm offered the job - negotiation?

Just back from 2nd interview, down to last three and whilst I'm certainly not counting my chickens, I felt it went quite well.

The salary seems fair for the role to me, but I'd like to negotiate term time hours, or as close as possible. It's a school job but they've advertised for 52 weeks, I'd like to do no more than 40 = 46, once paid holidays are added in.

Head said he'd call tonight, so I need to be ready. Do I tell him what I want there and then, or call back on Monday, or.....?

Also, I have another application out ATM, for a much more exciting job. I think I did a good application, but suspect I don't quite have the experience they want. Would it be very bad form to accept this job and then withdraw if I should be offered the other one? Applications don't close until next week, so it could be 3-4 weeks before I know.

Today's job is good and I'd be happy enough doing it for a year or two, but the other one is my ultimate goal IYSWIM.

  1. decide before the phone call how much you need to change the hours. If you ask and he says no, will you accept the job? Would anything else do as a compromise, eg shorter hours? Or a shorter week during the holidays?
  2. I would continue the application for the better job. The second person on the school's list will probably still be available in a month's time anyway.

I got it and we've agreed 47 weeks! Thank you
