Not doing well at work apparently

I'm an older mum, who got a permanent job for the first time in years, a year ago. I'm apparently not doing as well as the other lady (A)who started at the same time. A has grown up children, so can work longer hours, and take work home. I can't. A spends half her time chatting the other half arguing about processes, yet boss loves her!
A has changed all the processes (she has the time, she does little else) and I have to do it her way. In my appraisal, boss said I should do things the way A does, speed up, and pay attention to the minutest little detail (as A does). B is never there, I have been doing her work on my own for nearly half a year.
I asked for a pre-appraisal meeting, to make sure boss was happy with all the changes I made, but she just gave me another list of changes to make. I'm feeling rather stupid and slow (although well educated, with some good jobs behind me, and some not so good). I've applied for another job in another section, but what if I am really as lacking as boss seems to think?

Who is B? Another member of staff? If you have been covering her work as well as your own, it is unsurprising that you don't have time to do everything in minute detail. Why is A not sharing that workload?
