Hello,

I'm a secondary art teacher but would like to get some primary experience and want to try and get some supply teaching. My first obstacle is that I have no CV to update so need to write one and I don't really know where to start! I haven't taught at all for nearly 4 years, I have been a SAHM and started a business. How much detail do I need to go into re my teaching experience as I only taught for around 6 years in all? Any other advice welcome than you xx

I did the same after teaching for about 5 yrs, then left to go back to uni and got married and had DS, so had a 4 yr career break.

I would play to your strengths and mention having kids and starting a business as valuable strings to your bow - as a SAHM you can multi-task, you're motivated and self-disciplined from running your business and now you're ready to get back into the workplace. Microsoft Word has a template for CVs, or google CV template - loads will come up.

You will probably have to register with your local authority/council, who will either ask you for an up-to-date CRB check or will do it themselves and ask you for the fee, then your name will go onto a list of approved supply teachers. However, it's always worth ringing the school you want to teach in and having an informal chat with the headmaster or cover supervisor or even the secretary. Most opportunities come up from an informal chat and getting to know who's who etc. Just be honest and explain what you want. If you offer them free help, they'll probably tear your arm off!
