Sick pay query

roisin · 28/02/2015 07:29

If you come into work at 9 am, unwell; then go home at 9.45 am, does it count as a day sick - for contractual purposes ... how much sick pay you get, etc.

In our company this scenario is not described in contracts or in the staff handbook.

What would be the alternative?

If you're paid daily then it's a sick day. If you're paid hourly then it's (number of hours in working day-45 minutes) rounded to the nearest hour.

In commonsense terms, if you've had the vast majority of a day off because you are sick, it's a sick day.

In my work it's not counted as a sick day if you come in and then have to go home. Which is a shit rule, people go off sick for as long as they can self certify, come in the next day (so are back to work), then go home and start another period of absence which they can self certify for.

Another one of those that depends on your contract. For me that would be 1/2 a day sick, if I had worked half of my scheduled shift then go home sick it counts as a full day at work.

My employer would count this as a sick day.

What they wouldnt count is you working more than half a shift and then going home. That apparently is fair game... Hmm
