Lawyers on Demand- Anyone with experience?

Seems a good idea but I wonder whether you get regular work in practice and how often you need to go into the office / client site. I can weather some unpredictablity in my income but would want some security.

Hi Ted. Sorry to be annoying - I have absolutely no LOD experience but will hitch a rode on your thread and follow with interest.

On a slightly different tangent I know a couple of firms who would think about employing someone on a fixed term basis to cover secondment requests. Is this something you could approach a firm who knows you about?

They were quiet in my area of law so I didn't work through them ( and so can't comment on that) but understand that lots of other areas - commercial, property etc were booming. Found them professional, candid about work they may be able to offer and thorough in their assessment and recruitment process.

Sorry - on your actual question: they'll be able to give you a good idea as to how much work there may be for you which will depend on your area of law, pqe and how you want to work (on site / remotely) and they will be honest about that up front, which I found v helpful. There are also a couple of other similar types of similar companies - can't remember their names now but a quick google search will reveal.

Thanks Amelle. That's extremely helpful. It's good to know they are fairly up-front about their needs. I don't want to be sitting on their books with no work coming in.

I've not worked through them but I have looked at using their resource for a period. With us they offered me a few candidates they thought would be suitable for our medium term needs. In the end though we brought in someone as a fixed term employee as it was a relatively long posting so worthwhile. LOD were more expensive than this but not as eye watering as Axiom.

Given it is driven by client demands which they can't control, and then on your appeal to clients, I'm not sure how certain you could be about work coming in. The strength of your experience will certainly be a factor.

Meant to add I've met a few people who did stints with them and they seemed relatively positive but for them it wasn't a long term thing.

LOD have highly rigorous selection and training programmes, I understand' and it's certainly not a given you'll be selected. People I know doing it were doing it on an interim basis and we're happy to work in an office - so can't speak to ths
