Does anyone work in this sector?

I haven't worked for nearly 15 years & am wondering exactly what jobs/careers in this part of the jobs market involve?

What are good companies to be involved with/which should be avoided?

Any information from those in head offices or distribution centres appreciated! Thanks

I'm in HR but 2 of our main operations are supply chain / logistics (purchasing raw material, manufacturing it and then distributing goods to main customer)

Supply chain is a good dept to get to know the business and really have an impact on the bottomed line (buying prices, supplier management).

What do you want to know?

You really need to identify which area you're looking at as in manufacturing & to a certain degree FMGC there are clear differences between logistics and supply chain.

Warehousing methods have developed significantly in last 15 years and you'd need to get up to speed with latest technology - particuarly pick algorithms.

If you have worked with MRP II / ERP systems in the past - don't be phased by new SAP systems. They still cannot (even with expensive customisation) complete good production planning without manual intervention and forecast planning is a bit weak. However, big change has been development of EDI and barcoding / inventory management.

Good place to start is looking at what industry you want to be in and thinking about skills will still be relevant. Have a look at LinkedIn to see if there are any conferences you can attend FOC, expert groups and you an also look at YouTube (kid you not) to see companies show case latest technology in action.

Good luck
