Notice period when on Maternity Leave

My contract of employment states all staff must give four weeks notice should they wish to leave.

Now I am on Maternity Leave, I have been told any amendments on dates (date to return/extending mat leave) requires 8 weeks notice. Fine. Not a problem. Except they have also said this includes handing in Notice.

Is this even allowed? I was under the assumption that I should be treated as other employees are and have the same rights. So four weeks. I totally understand and agree that an 8 week notice period to amend length of Maternity Leave is fine, but why Notice of leaving?

Yes you only have to give 4 weeks' notice if that's what your normal notice period is. It would obviously be helpful to give a bit more if you can though.
